RIP: Fr. Jack Niland, OFM Cap.

Fr. Jack passed peacefully from this life during the afternoon. He had been living with us during his final illness.

I did not know him well, but if the constant stream of visitors who came to him in his last weeks--some quite literally from half a world away--is any indication, the Lord's goodness came to dwell in a great many lives through his ministry and kindness.

Thank you, Brother. Thank you for the good examples of your missionary zeal and your patience in your illness and dying.

Requiescat in pace.

Fr. Jack was my parish priest on Guam many many years ago. I was saddened to hear of his passing. Eternal rest grant unto them him, O Lord.

Father Jack was my teacher and friend. He served as a great leader to many of us in Guam in many ways. His example of "teaching by doing" inspired his first class of students (from the MCS Class of '77) to step forward and lead the effort to save Mount Carmel School from closure a few years ago. At a recent dinner in his honor here on Guam, we described the newly refurbished and expanded school as "The House that Jack Built!" as a tribute to his decade of service with our school and the spirit he lit in many of us. God blessed us in a great way by sharing this great man's life with all of us here. Si Yu'os Ma'ase'. Michael F. Phillips, Chairperson, Mount Carmel Alumni & Endowment Foundation

I learned during mass this evening that Father Jack passed away. Although we knew he was very ill, we are saddened by his passing. I miss his wonderful stories during his sermons and will remember them. We will miss him terribly here in Hawaii at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Pearl City. I thank him for bringing me back to my faith. I will never forget him. May God bless him and keep him.

We learned of Jack's passing this morning at Mass here in NH. We knew he was ill as we talked to him less than a month ago. We first met Jack in the late 1960's when he was in formation at the Capuchin Friary in Hudson, NH. He was our dinner guest many times and even served as our baby sitter on a few occasions. God Bless old Friend. Ed and Delores

I just learned of his passing yesterday. I am very thankful of his homilies. He always started with a story and ended with reminding us about the person in the story. Doing that helped us remember his teachings. There's a memorial service scheduled for August 12 at 7:00PM at OLGC Pearl City.

It was nice to see so many parishioners celebrating his life at his memorial tonight. I couldn't help but cry when I pictured him at the alter preaching his homily. We will miss him.

I had the great pleasure of having Fr. Jack as a priest going to Mount Carmel school from 1981-1984. Then again as an adult in Santa Rita in the early 1992-1993.
The best homilies I still remember putting gospel with past events such as FDR, Kennedy and other historical figures and times.

A great blessing to have known him and he never forgot your family name even if it was 10 years later.

GOD BLESS YOU FR. JACK!!!
Thank you!!!!!
