C! i agree that "it applies to everyone," as GrandmaK says. self-denial and the ascetic life is very necessary to our spiritual life. most people might only practice these things during the season of Lent and maybe Advent, but then forget about them the rest of the year. but, as you say, "plain, unglamorous and elementary forms of self-denial over the course of a day" (everyday) "are so important." i think this helps keep us on the right track. of course, regular, daily prayer and frequent participation in the Holy Eucharist helps us , too!
