By Their Playlists You Shall Know Them

I've had an iPod for about a year. I never really meant to have one, and I certainly don't need one. What happened was that one of the last summer's brides gave me a sizable iTunes gift card. The guardian said I could keep it, so there I was an iTunes user all of a sudden. So then I wanted an iPod. Saving up my "day off money" for a couple months, I was able to get a nano. I'm sure the bride in question was just trying to say thank you with a fun and hip gift, but if you look at my library as a whole, my poor iPod has been sacrificed to nerdy purposes.

In a year my libary has only grown to a few hundred songs, gleaned mostly from old CDs and free downloads. A couple of times I traded my loose change for iTunes credit through one of those change machines in the grocery store, but I really haven't spent much money on the whole thing, and for this I am grateful.

What's funny is that my iTunes library is dominated not by music, but by sung Mass parts in the Extraordinary Form, different gospel and prayer tone examples for practice, and imported language learning CDs.

So I'm really an intense rock and roller, walking down the street with my iPod, trying to get 1962 Missale Romanum prefaces in my ear, or trying to learn German or Italian. Oh well, I guess it's about growing up.

Again I thank you for sharing these little odd tidbits of your life. It is very rare for most of us to learn anything about the day to day things that make up a priest's life...

I wonder how much you might be influencing a young person to choose your state in life.

  2. To be honest, pennyante, I see that as one of the purposes of this blog...to see what life is really like as a religious or a priest, for the sake of those who might be discerning.

  6. I don't feel so guilty now, Bro. I too bought an ipod last year largely because I have a large music collection (chant, polyphony, trad., etc) and I brought it with me to Italy on the Capuchin Heritage program. I researched and saved and chose an 80Gb Classic. My only problem is with the update - I have to go to the site to get it to work properly and since I don't have a bank account or a credit card so far I have not been able to use their store. They're very handy. At this moment I'm copying some new CDs - Tallis, Byrd and Tavener!

  7. Thanks, Brother. We have something in common. I bet the heritage trip was wonderful. I went on the perpetual profession pilgrimage, which was similar I think, two summers ago.

  8. Here I was expecting some secret confession of old '80's punk rock music on your ipod. If anyone looked at my music collection they'd probably laugh so hard they'd crack a rib. As always, thanks for the glimpse of normality - your life!

  9. Well..to be honest, there is plenty of second wave punk, thrash metal, NWOBHM, etc. on the thing. But not as much as the other stuff.

Funny you brought this up. I'm discerning religious life and I was thinking the other day about the likelihood of being allowed an iPod or other music-player. Obviously it depends very much on the order and community.

I'm glad you've gotten some use of out yours! Mine has several favorite Catholic hymns. I'm embarrassed to say how often I listen to them in the car while driving. It's very un-cool of me! haha

Thanks for all that! My kids are determined to make me a 21st century mom and gave me one for my birthday but to their chagrin my favorite is Fr. Benedict G.'s rosary CD!

  12. Try buying an iTunes card, like at Target. That way you can get around those issues of not having a bank account. That's what my underage cousin did.

Anonymous here again; my 2nd favorite is Abp. Dolan's rosary recording(from Milwaukee) but his part, not the sisters' - sorry, Sisters.
You could take on a new one, from NY, as a new project!
    Please?

Faithful, or even just thoughtful criticisms are always welcome. Uninformed rudeness to other posters or to the Lord and His Church is not.

I also reserve the right to reject comments promoting things like private revelations and fringe points of view, if it seems to me like they are being presented in a misleading way.

If you raise a disagreement with something I say but I do not respond, please do not feel slighted or insulted, or imagine that this automatically means I disagree or agree with you. It's just that I don't find the comment box to be a constructive medium for certain forms of debate.
