So I guess, the birthday of the American brother having come around, the brethren wondered what special thing they might do for him. The result was my finding this when I arrived at my place in the refectory for dinner:
And according to the holy Gospel, let it be licit to eat of all foods that are set before them. (Rule, III:14)
Not for nothing, but the other brethren had gnocchi and steak.

I'll have what the other brothers are having. For one thing, steak is made with beef. ;)
Happy Birthday, dear Father!!! Guess they thought they were doing you a favor getting you food from Mickey D's. I would have eaten the fries but since I am allergic to beef, the burger would have been offered to someone else. Gnocchi I find very heavy and they would have been passed up as would the steak. Guess I would have had a very small meal. Speaking of which, it looks as if you have been having small meals of late. You seem to have lost a bit of weight. Hope it was a planned loss. You look really good. Looking forward to a retreat here at the Heart next weekend sponsored by the Secular Franciscans and given by Fr. Michael. It has been quite some time since I have been on a retreat so this will be a real treat. It looks as if I will be moving probably within the year--by summer if not before. I have been on the waiting list for an apartment in West Haverstraw, NY for 2 1/2 years. I am moving to be closer to my cousins who live in the area. My walking is getting more difficult and I want to be close to family in case I need help. I will also be five minutes away from the Marian Shrine and that will be a major blessing. I will be able to attend Cooperator meetings again. I have been unable to make the trip for the last 6 mos or so because it had become more difficult for me. Please keep this intention in prayer. I am eager to make the move but uncertain as to how I will effect it as I cannot afford a mover. I will miss Sacred Heart, but will be ever so happy to be so close to my Salesian Family.
Let us pray for each other during this upcoming Lent. Unlike so many other folks, Lent is my favorite liturgical season. I welcome the opportunity to take stock of myself and try to fine tune my spiritual life which is in need of some more than fine tuning. May your Lent be peace filled and truly led by the Spirit. Paraphrasing Hosea, "I will allure [him], I will lead [him] into the desert and speak to [his]heart." May you emerge from the desert filled with heavenly food and drink such as only the Lord can give.
I must thank you because this post made me laugh on an unhappy day. McDonald's in Italy and on your birthday - although "Offer it up!" I can hear the sisters telling us....
I read the newest issue of Koinonia yesterday evening. Do you translate the entire newsletter? It is very gracefully written - also beautifully edited.
